In a government of reckless spending, Congressman Burton is seeking financial balance. The Kokomo Perspective shares his statement below.
"After witnessing the unprecedented and reckless federal spending binge over the last year, I believe we must put a permanent harness on Congress. The fact of the matter is, Congress is systematically abusing our nation's finances, and this behavior has imperiled the foundations of our economy and the future of our country.
"It's time to guarantee the American people that their government is indeed limited, and can never grow beyond a reasonable level. The joint resolution I have cosponsored will give States the opportunity to ratify a Constitutional amendment that bars federal spending from exceeding 20 percent of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP) in any fiscal year. In the event of an emergency, exceptions can be made under a declaration of war or with two-thirds majority approval by Congress.
"I believe this effort, if successful, will help protect our nation from tyranny, and do much to keep our promise of liberty to future generations."
